This Apple Crisp is easy to make and so indulgent! It's made with a healthy twist thanks to the whole wheat four, oats and avocado oil.
How is this crisp healthier?
You'll use way less butter than a usual crisp recipe but still have the buttery cinnamon topping. Plus, we're not doing as much added sugar as other recipes.
We'll also use whole wheat flour and oats for added fiber. The ingredients are super simple, let's run over them!
Preparing the Apple Filling and Topping
For the filling you'll need:
- Apples - I love honey crisp apples for baking, but you could use whichever you prefer!
- Lemon juice - I love a balance of sweet and tart. Plus, the citric acid prevents the apples from browning.
- Brown sugar - a must in any fall recipe
- Maple syrup - needs a little bit of a liquid
- Vanilla Extract - for those warm, cozy notes
- Corn Starch - helps thicken the filling into a more cohesive syrup consistency
- Cinnamon - of course, a must!
For the cinnamon topping you'll need:
- Equal parts whole wheat flour and oats - give the crumble a good balance of texture
- Pecans - you gotta have a little nuttiness
- Brown sugar of course
- Cinnamon of course as well
- Baking powder - helps add a little extra browning
- Salt - since we're using unsalted butter you'll want a smidge
- Melted Butter - we're using half the amount most recipes call for so you can still have the butter taste without the added saturated fat.
- Avocado oil - adds richness and good heart healthy fats
I like to start by getting the topping ready first, setting it to the side and then prepping the apples.
I preheat the oven while I'm preparing the apple filling.
For the filling, I like slicing the apples thin about a ¼ inch in thickness.
For the topping, I prefer using melted butter and oil. It's so much easier than cutting in cold butter.
Baking the Crisp
You'll bake the crisp for 35-40 minutes or until the topping becomes golden brown.
Let the crisp sit for 15minutes to allow the filling to thicken before serving and enjoying!
Serving Recommendations
I love enjoying it with the classic vanilla ice cream! You could also try topping with cool whip if you want a more airy, fluffy texture.
For an extra dose of vanilla flavor, try drizzling Trader Joe's Bourban Vanilla Bean Paste.

- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted melted butter
- ¼ cup avocado oil
Instructions
Prepare the Crumble Topping
- In a mixing bowl add the whole wheat flour, oats, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder and salt.
- Pour the melted butter and avocado oil to the mixing bowl and combine. You should get a good crumble texture.

Prepare the Filling
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

I’d like to try this recipe, but I noticed that brown sugar is listed twice in your recipe, once for the dry mix and another time to mix with the apples. Just wondering where the brown sugar is supposed to go. Thanks and happy Thanksgiving!!

Yes, there is brown sugar in both the apple filling and crumble topping! Hope you enjoy and happy Thanksgiving to you too!
