This 5 ingredient homemade applesauce is easily made in a crockpot and so delicious!
This recipe is unsweetened with no added sugar. However, you can add sugar if you prefer your applesauce sweeter.
I like applesauce that isn't overly sweet and has a little tartness to it, which is why I added granny smith apples to balance the sweet honey crisp apples.
Ingredients
This applesauce requires just 5 ingredients! Plus, there's no added sugar.
I like to use a variety of apples - usually one sweet and another less sweet or tart.
I add about 1 tablespoon lemon juice or the juice of about half a lemon, a little water and a good sprinkle of cinnamon.
That's all you really need!
I've made this recipe with extra spices like cloves and nutmeg and I found the flavor overpowering.
However, if you try something different than the recipe calls for and enjoy it, share what you added in the comments!
Steps to make Homemade Applesauce
You can use the stove or a crock pot.
In this recipe we'll use a crockpot - you'll set it, leave it and then come back to the most amazing smell!
You'll start by peeling the apples and coring them. If you like the peel, keep it for the extra fiber!
I've tried making it with and without the peel and prefer it without, but try it and see which way you prefer.
Slice the apples thin, add to the crockpot, top with the water, lemon juice and cinnamon.
Mix it all together before turning the crockpot on high and letting it do its magic for 3 hours.
Leave the house and come back to the most amazing-smelling home!
After the apples cook, you can use an immersion blender to blend the applesauce into a smooth consistency or keep it chunky and just use a whisk or large fork.
I love the chunky texture, so I use a whisk to keep some apples together.
Selecting Apples for Applesauce
Truthfully, you can use whatever apples you want!
If you prefer applesauce sweet go for super sweet apples like honey crisps, fuji or gala apples.
If you enjoy tart applesauce add a few granny smith or McIntosh apples.

Toppings
My favorite way to enjoy applesauce is served warm with freshly whipped cream. It's the perfect comfort food!
You can also add different toppings. Try seeds or nuts for a crunchy topping such as pumpkin seeds, pecans, walnuts.
Add an omega 3 boost with chia seeds or ground flaxseed or toasted coconut flakes can add a nutty and tropical flavor.
Recipe FAQs
I've tried it without lemon juice and wouldn't recommend it. The flavor and consistency is off in my opinion.
You absolutely can! I prefer applesauce without peels but try both ways and see what you like.
