This simple hummus recipe requires just 6 ingredients plus 2 for topping! If you've never had homemade hummus - you'll never go back to store-bought after you make it from scratch!
Made with canned chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt and ice. Blend these ingredients to get the smoothest hummus!
The key is blending in the ice at the end to get the perfect texture. I love topping it with olive oil and za'atar.
Simple Ingredients
This recipe is super easy. All you need is:
- Canned Chickpeas
- Lemon juice
- Tahini
- Garlic
- Salt
- Ice
Olive oil is used mainly for topping and sprinkle whatever spices or herbs sound good. I absolutely love za'atar, which is a blend of sumac, sesame, thyme and salt. It goes well with the sesame flavor from the tahini and has a delicious savory flavor from the sumac and thyme.
There are other variations of za'atar but this is the most basic one. You can even make it on your own.
Other ways to enjoy za'atar include sprinkling it on yogurt, toast, eggs or salad. Anything you want to add a savory component will work perfectly with this!
Alternative Toppings
Want something different and non-traditional?
Try topping hummus with fresh herbs like parsley or basil.
Infused olive oils like thyme or rosemary infused olive oil would be a great way to add flavor as well.
This is a simple hummus recipe, so feel free to change it up and share your version in the comment section!
You could also add toppings - think of it like a 7 layer dip. You could spread the hummus on a plate and top with an olive layer, bell pepper layer, tomato layer and parsley layer for a delicious dip that's scoopable!
How to Use Hummus
You can use hummus in a variety of ways. Try it on bread as a sandwich spread. Use it as a dip for carrots, celery, broccoli and other veggies. Use it with pretzels, crackers or chips.
It's a great savory addition to use on a charcuterie board. It works well alongside fig jams, fruits, cheese, nuts, seeds and crackers.
Storage
Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. While you can freeze hummus, the texture may change after thawing.
I would recommend only refrigerating your hummus and not freezing it.
Recipe Tips and FAQs
No! While you absolutely can, I want this recipe to be easy and not complicated. I haven't noticed a significant difference between hummus that's made with the skin vs without.
I wouldn't recommend it as it will change the texture and possibly the flavor.
